Ahok Talks about Economic Equality and Capital City Move

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The former governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok, gave the Indonesian government handy advice in terms of moving the country’s capital city to East Kalimantan.
“Residents in the Capital’s vicinity must retain modern agricultures and stockbreeding,” he said to Tempo on Wednesday, August 28.
As a person who once led Jakarta, he argues that economic equality can only be achieved once its people, mainly in the vicinity of the capital city, are independent in the food sector with the help of modern technology.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo announced the capital city move to East Kalimantan was also driven by the urge to evenly distribute Indonesia’s economy and prevent the population from becoming Java-centric.
As of the city’s current situation, Jokowi maintained that the city has accommodated too many burdens which take the form of a possible population boom.
Ahok’s suggestion reflects on the economic condition in several areas of Java Island – which neighbors with Jakarta - that he said are surprisingly still economically left behind.
